It’s time for B-logging letter B in the April A to Z challenge!
St Barbara caught my interest because of her determination and devotion to God, even to the extent of forsaking her earthly father. She had the builders (secretly) place 3 windows in the new bathhouse that her father was having constructed, in devotion to the Holy Trinity. When her father learned of her conversion, he denounced her before the civil tribunal. She was horribly tortured and ultimately beheaded, her own father being executioner. God, however, quickly punished her persecutors – while her soul was being borne into heaven, a bolt of lightening struck her father, who was thus rushed to the judgement seat of God! St Barbara is known as the patron saint of armourers, artillerymen, military engineers, miners and others who work with explosives because of her old legend’s association with lightning, and also of mathematicians. Her feast day is December 4th.
No picture for St Bertilia, but I imagine she was beautiful! She gave her life to God at an early age, but, upon the request from her parents, married a young gentleman. He, however, agreed to remain chaste, and the two lived together as brother and sister, serving the poor. Pretty sure her hubby deserves to be honored as well for that agreement! 😉
